Mini Watercolor Journals

I made two little watercolor journals, sewn bindings and all.
4"x6" watercolor painting of yesterday's bright sunny afternoon sky

Fun to paint in, but can only paint one picture in each and then must wait for paint to dry.
Painting Yellow

And I painted another bright happy sky.

Painting the Sky

Stormy skies,
pain disguise
for rainy eyes.
Buffalo
down below,
dragons flying high.
Sky blue
bled red
Tomorrow will be yellow
sunny sky
butterflies, and
clouds of marshmallow.

I know you don’t believe me when I say

that you get better looking every day.

You say it’s because I cannot see,

but I see what’s inside, not just on display.

The Moon

Look at the moon with me.

Confidant

The man in the moon and I are friends.
All I have to do is look at him.
He reads my mind and knows my thoughts.
He listens patiently to everything I say.
Occasionally, the clouds get in the way.

I give him one day off each month.
In return, he gives a night of full attention.
The clouds are jealous, and oft' put up a front.
The wind keeps them in compliance.
He and I formed an alliance.

We have an audience of stars
who've been attending us for years.
They gather around us every night.
The stars keep all in strictest confidence,
everything discussed in our evening conference.

Unlike those chatty little crickets
proclaiming all my secrets,
yammering on all through the night.
The stars twinkle up above
with the secret knowledge of my fears and love.

The man in the moon is the quiet type.
He gives me the best advice.
He is always quite concise.
His glance leaves me feeling nice
even when he's just a slice.

July was WorldWatercolorMonth

I painted a tribute to all the photographers who plan, patiently wait,
and painstakingly take perfect pictures.
Thank you.

This is some of what I painted through July.

These and more are posted on my Instagram page with the details of the prompt for the day and the size of the paintings.

People Say My Husband's Scary

People say my husband's scary.
An opinion I can't dissuade.
He is big and bald and brawny,
but I have never been afraid.

He's my tall polite provider,
playful, pleasant, pertinacious,
protecting of his family,
practical, and perspicacious.

He had to let his hair grow back
and his face fill up with a beard
for a movie roll he landed.
His friends and family all cheered.

I was totally excited.
I'm his greatest supporting fan.
Now my hairy handsome husband,
I see a teddy-bear-ish man.

Alas, I'm told the role he plays
is massive mean mobster muscle
for the movie's leading bad man.
He's not one with which to tussle.

So, whether he has hair or not,
doesn't apparently matter.
He will always scare the strangers.
When I'm with him, they all scatter.

Seeking Distractions

No matter how hard
I try to count stitches
my brain keeps talking to you.
I need a more complicated pattern
to shut you out
before I cry.

Verisimilitude

The wrong side of the bed?
There is no right side when you’re gone.
I lay here in your spot,
completely still,
imagining, remembering
phantom pleasure of your touch
in such detail
that it feels real.

Nights without you
are eternity alone,
insomnia looms
till you come home.

Shadow Puppets

4"x6" watercolor painted by Paula Nevison, inspired by Shadow Show poem written by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater

Shadow Show

When birds are snuggled into nests
when night begins to fall
my hands like making shadows
in the spaces on my wall.

The moon peeks in my window
like a knowing, glowing eye
to help my hands turn into birds
and flapping fingers, fly.

My hands are dogs and dragons
for I learn new shapes each night.
Shadow-shapes of cats and trees
dance through moony light.

My hands like telling stories
of forest, sky, and sea
whenever we play shadow show –
my wall, the moon, and me.

Never Doubt That I Love

Doubt thou that the stars are fire;
Doubt thou that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt that I love.

Be sure you count – should I forget

When you feel like your light is starting to fade, remember that the darkness is full of surprises. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they are not there. Smile (literally, it helps your mood) and see what you can make of the shadows. If there was no night, you would never see the stars.

"The Very Thought Of You"

The very thought of you
And I forget to do
The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a queen
And foolish though it may seem to me that's everything

The mere idea of you
The longing here for you
You never know how slow the moments go
Till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you
My love

The mere idea of you
The longing here for you
You never know how slow the moments go
Till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you
My love

The Sky in Your Eyes

If I could no longer paint the sky,
if it was only white and gray,
I would paint the colors in your eyes,
their twinkle when you smile at me.
For not even the heavens can compare
to the multiple colors of love I see
sparkling sunshine romantically
dancing on highlights debonair.

Everything I Need

You have everything
I could possibly need
in your pants
pockets, full of
gadgets and tools,
pens, pencils, keys
to all the places
I might need to go.
You are always prepared.
Am I calling
your pockets fat?
No. I’m saying
I like what’s
in your pants.

My Mettle

You give me confidence
to conquer the world.
You are my muse,
my mettle,

of my variable X.
I can go anywhere (with you),
and do anything (you want).
You make me feel safe.

doesn’t mean I don’t need you desperately.
And I’m not going to tell you that
I think about you all the time, that
you are the ghost in my mind that
I talk to all day long.

Deep-burning,Unquenchable Love

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

100 Day Painting Project

I did some dirty paint pouring last week,
inspired by the red wine and coffee sitting in front of me,
my freshly painted bright red fingernails, finally dry enough, while
tatting more on the pink and white doily, that is taking too long to make,
contemplating indulging in chocolate cake for lunch, instead of actual healthy food,
and thinking about Valentine's day approaching.

8"x10" and 18"x24" and 12"x36" acrylic on canvas

I am also working on a series of 9"x12" watercolor paintings, painted on top of papers that I first hand write Bible verses all over. I have actually painted 9 of them, but here are the first 6. You can see the other 3 on Instagram or wait until I paint the next 3 and post those 6 here.

I did not, however, finish the 24"x48" piece yet,
but I am having fun working on it and will post it when it is finished.

A hopeless romantic,
is there any such thing?
Aren’t all romantics
full of hope?

Do You Think of Me?

I know that when you go to work you have
things you need to concentrate on,
machines that need your attention,
problems you need to solve,
complicated, all engrossing,
people asking you questions,
phone calls to answer.
Do you ever think of me
between or during things?
You are always on my mind.
I miss you all the time
that we are not together.

100 Days of Tatting

Yesterday I worked on the long next row of the doily on the left. Today I will continue working on that long row.
Also, yesterday I started another large painting. This one is 24"x48". I will post a finished picture of it next week. You can watch my progress daily of tatting and painting on Instagram.

I spent the morning falling apart,
but I like sorting things,
and organizing things,
and doing puzzles, so
I’ll spend the afternoon
putting myself back together.

100 Day Project: The Sun, Librettist Etraordinaire

First week, first big painting, 30" x40" acrylic on canvas.

I haven't signed this yet because I am going to look at it for a while to decide if it is actually finished or if there is anything else it needs, but in the meantime, I am very excited about starting the next big painting tonight. It will be 24"x 48". I post progress pictures on my Instagram page.

100 Day Project, Starting Point

Yesterday was the first day of my Painting Large project, The Sun, Librettist Extraordinaire.
This is what I'm starting with, a 30" x 40" canvas that I started a long time ago and set aside. I worked on it last night, and will keep working on it until it is finished. Next week I will have a finished picture of it to show you.

100 Day Project, Starting New and Continuing Old

A new 100 Day Project is starting in 2 days, January 22, 2020. I am calling mine, The Sun, Librettist Extraordinaire, and I am going to paint Large instead of (actually, in addition to) the little paintings I usually do, painting every evening to finish a large canvas each week. This does not mean that I am going to quit my 100 days of tatting. Tatting will continue.

Here is an update picture of my continued tatting. I have not yet tatted today, but I will post today’s tatting on my instagram page later when it is finished.

Dessert First

but this date
was the best.

Doodling Hearts

At night I dream of you
Awake or asleep, I think of you.

Everlasting, unfailing, my feelings for you

You mean the world to me
You are my sun, my moon, and the stars too.

I love you in so many ways
Let me count the ways. It will take all day.

I’m writing over and over again
Doodling hearts until my pencil breaks

I Love you, love you
I love you, forever

Never forget, Always remember,
I Love you, love you
I love you, forever

Tatting every day December 21st, 2019 to March 19th, 2020.
This is what I have tatted since January 1st.
I tatted the chain to my pretty stone pendant today.

An Eclectic Mind

I love the sky,
the moon,
the sunset and sunrise,
the shapes in the clouds.
I’d give Rorschach butterflies.
His ink blots,
I would romanticize.
Find a story of a princess and a castle,
and with a dragon, glamorize.

he’d summize.
Away with the fairies.
Must supervise.”
