Teaching Toddlers Fundamental Lessons with Laundry

A load of black laundry.
Let's play a game.
Match the socks.
They are all black,
and they are all socks, but
Opa's, and Uncle Joey's, and Aunt Lily's
are not the same,
a complicated game.
A four year old can do it,
can help, and be included,
enjoy a sense of accomplishment,
be proud of her productivity.
A menial task to me
is fun for a little one.
While I quickly fold the big clothes,
she is heartily matching socks
(sorting and classifying objects),
noticing how items are alike and different,
creating an awareness
vital for her future learning.
